Title:  Modeling Human-Earth feedbacks: GCAM-E3SM coupling

Abstract

Understanding human-environment feedbacks is critical for understanding the evolution of the Earth system and for projecting the potential influences of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies in the context of climate change. We have shown that including terrestrial productivity feedbacks in global Human-Earth modeling has significant consequences for the scenario, climate, and carbon. To further advance this relatively young area of research we are incorporating the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) as a component in E3SM. This will enable Human-Earth model development to advance in conjunction with advancements in the other components and facilitate needed advancement in implementing and analyzing feedbacks between the Human and Earth systems. We have completed the structural integration of GCAM as a component, are successfully passing terrestrial feedbacks through the coupler, and are working toward passing the CO2 emissions from GCAM to EAM (through the coupler).
