TitleE3SM v2 Water Cycle Model and Simulation Campaign Part 2: Low resolution ocean and sea ice results

Abstract

In this talk, we present part 2 of the low resolution E3SM version 2 overview, focusing on the ocean and sea ice results.  We show that the ocean mean climate is consistent with version 1 and that the sea ice climate is improved with a better seasonal cycle of sea ice volume in the Arctic.  The latter is likely due to improved energy accounting related to frazil ice formation and critical bug fixes.  We also examine the fidelity of ocean heat content (OHC) in version two relative to a reanalysis product and examine the role of aerosol forcing on the simulated heat content.  We find that the globally integrated OHC compares well to reanalysis in the upper ocean, but this is due to compensating regions of anomalously high and low OHC anomalies.  Reducing the aerosol forcing does improve OHC in some regions, but is far from the only factor in the biases.  We end with an update on progress and next steps to understand the E3SM AMOC bias.
