I’ll present the results of E3SM’s recent “deep dive” revising E3SM’s policies for integration of new features into the model and the code review process. The deep dive committee spent several months reviewing case studies from our experience developing and tuning the V2 model. These case studies led to a formalization of the best practices already followed by many developers and the recognition that new code, even if disabled by default needs to be fully tested in the coupled system.
