TitleEAGLES Updates

Abstract

The "Enabling Aerosol-cloud interactions at GLobal convection-permitting scalES (EAGLES)" project aims to develop improved treatments of aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions (ACI) for E3SMv4 capable of running at global convection permitting resolutions. To address the complex scientific and technical challenges, we combine expertise in atmospheric science, data science, computational science, and software engineering from 2 national labs and 5 universities. Over the last two years, we have developed new treatments to better represent the lifecycle of ultra-fine aerosols, anthropogenic dusts, wildfire aerosol, secondary organic aerosols, and giant aerosols. We have also developed deep neural network emulators to improve the representation of aerosol optics, aerosol activation, and warm rain initiation. To perform accurate and fast simulations at convection-permitting resolution, we have refactored and converted the MAM aerosol microphysics to work with the E3SMv4 software infrastructure to achieve performance portability in DOE’s GPU-based computers. We have also developed new aerosol and ACI diagnostics to facilitate routine scientific validation during parameterization development. In this presentation, I will give an overview of the EAGLES vision, approach, and progress, and discuss our next steps.
