Title:

Introduction to E3SM Atmosphere Model's inbuilt debugging tools

Abstract:

It is well known that E3SM is a complex model. Complex interactions between its various components and the parallel nature of the code (among other factors) pose various challenges in the model development activities.  While developing new features (or making changes to the existing features), model developers often run into issues such as runtime errors or the model simply producing wrong answers! Developers often use their own debugging techniques to fix these issues. These debugging techniques range from the use of good old “print” (or “write”) statements to more sophisticated tools like open source or proprietary debuggers. General-purpose debugging tools provide a good overview of the problem and oftentimes help in resolving the issue. For more complicated problems, EAM (E3SM Atmosphere Model) has some inbuilt debugging utilities. Inbuilt debugging tools provide an edge over the general-purpose debugging tools as they are aware of the model’s internal data structures.  This talk will present a new inbuilt debugging tool present in EAM which can further help expedite the debugging process. Some use cases will be presented to demonstrate the use of this tool within EAM.
