EAMxx infrastructure: Designing a next generation global atmosphere model

Aaron Donahue
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Abstract: The SCREAM project has provided a unique opportunity to design a global atmosphere model from the ground up.  Building on top off 5+ decades of CESM and E3SM model development we have implemented a new EAM Atmosphere Driver (AD) with improved flexibility and functionality.  This talk will be an introduction to the design philosophy of the EAMxx infrastructure with highlights of key new features.  Leveraging object-oriented programming for both atmosphere processes and model state variables, we will show how EAMxx has improved atmosphere process interoperability, runtime flexibility and transparency in debugging.
