Title: Improvements to the QBO in E3SM
Abstract:
The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the zonal mean wind in the tropical lower stratosphere in the default E3SMv1 is not very realistic: the period is too short: ~ 16 months as compared to the mean period of 28 months in observations. The amplitude of the oscillation in the default model is too large, especially in the westerly phase. We have improved the representation of the QBO in E3SMv1, by modifying the convective GW parameterization. In the improved simulation, the QBO period is 27 months, with the amplitude of the westerly phase close to observations (westerly phase still a little weak). We also investigated the forcing from resolved waves (Kelvin and mixed-Rossby gravity waves) and their roles on the QBO, and will discuss how future improvements to the convection parameterization could improve the tropospheric and stratospheric circulations.
