Title:  The Doubly Periodic SCREAM Configuration

Abstract

In this presentation we introduce the Doubly Periodic SCREAM (DP-SCREAM) configuration. SCREAM is a global cloud resolving model and therefore requires significant computational resources. DP-SCREAM represents a configuration to provide users with “fast feedback”, akin to a single-column model often supported by most GCMs, and makes running the SCREAM code base accessible to the entire E3SM community. This configuration takes the form of a standalone three dimensional cloud resolving model on a planar grid, forced by Intensive Observation Period (IOP) files and with boundary conditions that are periodic in both horizontal directions. In this talk we discuss the motivation, summary of development, the case library, and the availability of DP-SCREAM. We also present an example of a scientific application of DP-SCREAM with an assessment of the horizontal resolution sensitivity of SCREAM by running simulations with horizontal grid sizes ranging from 100 m to 5 km for a variety of regimes.
