Title: Wildfire modeling with E3SM and machine learning techniques

AbstractWildfire has been playing an important role in directly shaping local ecosystem properties and functions. The fire emissions also significantly impact regional climate conditions, aerosol loading, and light environment, which will in return affect land surface ecosystem dynamics at large-scale. However, modeling wildfire (i.e., burn area) in E3SM land model is challenging due to model structure and parametric uncertainties. In this work, we will present our recent outcomes from multiple wildfire modeling approaches under the framework E3SM, including processed-based fire model and multiple machine learning based surrogate fire models.
