Title:

Unstructured Wave Modelling in E3SM

Abstract:

Wind-generated waves represent an important interfacial process that is currently unresolved in E3SM. The goal of the Coastal Waves Mini-NGD is to incorporate the NOAA WaveWatchIII model into the E3SM and explore the role of waves in the coupled climate system. The inclusion of wind wave physics presents an opportunity to consider several coupled wave interactions including: vertical mixing parameterizations, sea-state dependent wind stress, changes in ocean surface albedo, marginal ice zone dynamics, and coastal flooding. In many of these cases, E3SM’s multi-resolution capabilities are essential to accurately describe the coupled physics. Recently, we have developed and validated the first global, unstructured, WaveWatchIII configuration. We are working toward developing couplings which will allow E3SM to incorporate wind-driven effects into a broad range of science applications.
