Abstract

The Human-Earth System Feedback (HES) group research plan for E3SM is driven by the Phase 3 science question which focuses on the impacts of different U.S. decarbonization scenarios for global and U.S. regional climate; how different pathways of energy futures contribute to U.S. decarbonization strategies; the implications of decarbonization on land and marine biogeochemical cycles; and how different decarbonization strategies influence heat extremes and wildfires in the U.S. This poster will describe and review each of the major ongoing tasks in the HES group. These include an update on coupled biogeochemistry (BGC) simulations with and without human interactions, evaluating new features for coupled mode in v3 (e.g., land features, MOSART river features, tuned ocean and marine BGC), planning status of the coupled BGC and Human simulation campaigns for Phase 3 and the needed model capabilities to achieve these simulations.
