Abstract

Although standard diagnostics of atmosphere simulations, such as mean and variability assessments, can give useful insights into the aspects of climate they do not give much insight into the operation of individual parameterizations for particular dynamic or thermodynamic regimes. Such insights are invaluable as they can either confirm or refute certain expectations as to the functioning of a particular new or existing parameterizations scheme and its relative role as part of a complete parameterization suite. The diagnostics in question focus on the vertical profile of the daily averaged column climate states and parameterization tendencies as functions of precipitation, vertical velocity and outgoing longwave radiation. Previous examination of these relationship have clearly revealed aspects of CLUBB in CAM5 that needed further examination including profiles of energy adjustment and the balance been CLUBB and ZM deep convection tendencies. We hope to show results from control v0.3 and candidate configuration simulations of v1.0, including ne120, regionally refined, L72, CLUBB and UNICON simulations. A further dimensions to this analysis is how the relationships evolve in time and by examining CAPT-time simulations the role of systematic errors can be assessed.
