Abstract

OMEGA is the next-generation ocean component for E3SM. We pursue verification and validation of OMEGA by implementing a suite of test cases in the python package, polaris. Polaris is an automated system to set up and run test cases for E3SM components and is the successor of the compass package. We present the outcomes of our recent hackathon (“sprint“) focused on shallow-water test case development. These test cases were used to verify the shallow-water dynamics in MPAS-Ocean and can be easily applied to OMEGA as it is developed. Of particular interest may be the first implementation of the Method of Manufactured Solutions for MPAS-Ocean, which allowed us to verify the nonlinear momentum advection equations. We have implemented the capability to set up the same test cases for both MPAS-Ocean and OMEGA to allow for inter-model comparison. Future work will focus on porting many validation tests from compass to polaris and implementing task parallelism in polaris.
