Abstract

Aerosol forcings, and especially aerosol–cloud interactions, remain uncertain in climate models. In E3SMv2, it was assessed that the overly negative aerosol effective radiative forcing led to a weaker warming in the temperature historical record in the second half of the twentieth century. As a result, a major goal for E3SMv3 is to reduce the aerosol forcing while maintaining scientifically valid and advanced aerosol representation. To this end, we implement cloud albedo susceptibility diagnostics in E3SMv3 to better constrain and understanding aerosol–cloud interactions. We find that while darkening clouds are present spatially, they do not appear on the phase space of cloud droplet number against liquid water path, which we are actively investigating now.
