Title:

Time-Stepping Methods for PDEs and Ocean Models

Abstract

In this talk, I will be discussing my research findings at LANL over the last couple of years, which involve:
(a) Deriving the full expression of the local truncation error of hyperbolic PDEs;
(b) Developing a theory on the spatial and temporal order of convergence of hyperbolic PDEs;
(c) Addressing complications associated with time-stepping in ocean models e.g. barotropic-baroclinic splitting and time-averaging of barotropic modes with appropriate filters;
(d) Designing a suite of verification exercises for the barotropic equations of unstructured ocean models like LANL's MPAS-O;
(e) Performing convergence studies on each test case of (d) with refinement in space and time, and verifying the numerical order of convergence against the one specified by our theory in (a) and (b).
These topics will be presented with examples of ocean simulations, to be of interest to the broader climate modeling audience.
