"Installing" is a bit of a misnomer.  One does not install E3SM like system software: in a location such as  /usr/local/bin for everyone to use.   Instead, a user creates executables for their cases and keeps them in their own directories.

On supported machines (listed on Configuration Management) you can get started running E3SM by following steps 1-8 of the Development Getting Started Guide.

On an unsupported machine:

  • it may be necessary to first install some of the software E3SM needs.  See Configuration Management.  You are on your own but some help is on the pages below.
  • Start by porting CIME to your new machine.   You'll have to add your machine to CIME's configuration system.  See http://esmci.github.io/cime/users_guide/porting-cime.html.  You can use the version of CIME that comes with E3SM or check out CIME by itself from https://github.com/ESMCI/cime
  • Once you can build CIME-only X and A cases, try building E3SM cases.   Then try running the E3SM test suites.
