Abstract

The dynamics of the mixed layer are sensitive to the optical parameterization used in an ESM. Historically, the GFDL ESM2Mc model calculates the absorption of light by chlorophyl only, following a formulation by Manizza. We show how introducing a representation of the absorption by CDOM separately from chlorophyl affects the penetration of light, resulting in an effect on the SAT, the SST, the depth of the mixed layer, the area of the ice cover and the transport of heat. Recently, observational measurements have shown a cooling of the SST in the Southern Ocean which is rarely captured by ESMs but is enhanced in our simulations under doubled CO2 conditions.
